What actors of the 1940's careers were destroyed because of the uproar of the talkies? who's were created?

I need names of specific actors to use as examples. The names of the films they were in would be helpful too! Thanks

  1. Two actors come to mind when I think of silent film stars who failed to transition (successfully) to talkies; Douglas Fairbanks and Harrison Ford ( no, not THAT Harrison Ford. This Ford was a silent film star from the 20s, no relation to the current actor of the same name). Here are their respective wiki pages that list their filmographies: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_Fairbanks http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harrison_Ford_%28silent_film_actor%29
  2. The great Greta Garbo springs to mind. She had only made silent films until "Anna Christie" in 1930. "Garbo Speaks!" was the headline. People were worried how her Swedish accent came across, but they needn't have been; she delighted audiences with her "Gimme a visky, ginger ale on the side an' don' be stingy, baby". "'Her voice', wrote Richard Watts Jr, 'is revealed as a deep, husky, throaty contralto that possesses every bit of that fabulous, poetic glamor that has made this distant Swedish lady the outstanding actress of the motion picture world.'" Have a look about halfway down here, under "Labor": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talkies
