Why should or should we not drill for oil In America?

I would like to hear your arguments. Gas is to expensive, and it is hurting lower income families, and sometimes work and family do not live close to home. Not to mention the fact most of the countries that sell us oil hate us and home to terrorists. On the flipside drilling is bad for the environment. Which one outweighs the other?

  1. There is no good reason why we shouldn't be drilling domestically. It makes far more economic and environmental sense than converting food crops into biofuels that require more energy to make and are less efficient than oil-based fuels. Can anyone name the last major environmental incident involving DRILLING for oil? Over 100 oil platforms were knocked off line during Katrina. None resulted in the spill of oil into the ocean.
  2. I think it would be a good idea as long as it is done in a safe manner. Of course you are going to have some pollution. However, what is worse, dying from startvation because the trucks can no longer afford to deliver food to the grocers, or dying from pollution? I think we are already dying from pollution.
  3. Drilling for oil here in America will not do much to alleviate the problem. The hotly debated Alaska site, we've all heard so much about, they say will only provide about 1 million barrels total. That's not much. I ask you to research this. What was the price of gas/oil in 2000 and why? The answers might surprise you. I just saw on C-Span this morning that the major cause of the high oil prices was the de-regulation of the market, done by the Bush administration in 2001. Speculators are pushing prices upward and, it was said, are responsible for one third of the total price we currently pay at the pump. Former President Bill Clinton would not allow this. Congress needs to investigate but they won't be able to do much without assistance from the Republican-controlled Justice Dept. The other major reason for the high prices is a shortage of supply, also caused by the Bush administration by taking Iraq out of the loop.
  4. You do get oil from Alaska just not from protected land. There are differing claims about how much oil is being blocked. Also there is no shortage of supply, Exxon Mobile pumps out plenty of oil in Texas and Alaska they don't sell it any cheaper than Citgo does. They're welcome to, they'd get enough business to drive those foriegn companies out and make money doing it. Not as much as they're making now and they won't stop, no company cares about you. They will bleed you slow. It's all policy. I don't think it matters how much oil there is on hand they will charge you as much as you will pay. It's not just bad for the environment, we've used all the oil that will exist on this planet for a very long time. This little bit in the preserve does not matter in the scheme, it will prolong the inevitable end of oil for like two weeks at global demand. So just leave it alone, it won't save you money it'll just give cheney and his turkey vultures an excuse to not have to try too hard to make a buck. You won't see a dime of that money. There's plenty of oil for you to drill outside of the national parks. Go get yourself a dowser rod and and an oil drill and have a huntin.
  5. I don't think it would make a difference if we drilled for oil in America. The US should've came up with an alternative to oil at least a decade ago instead of trying to find solutions now.
